Article: "I was an addict" – ‘Straits Times IN’ Section (In The Air Pg 2)
1a) What are some of the earliest signs mentioned in the article to indicate that a person is addicted to gaming?
1b) State some of the methods listed by the author to overcome the addiction to gaming.
2) What are some of your reactions after reading this article? If a close friend of yours confesses to you that he/she is addicted to online games, what would your advice to him/her be?
1a)
the person begins skipping meals, gets irritated easily and cannot stop playing his computer game. he might also tend to skip school just to play on the computer.
1b)
limit the person to a certain time limit for the computer, or cut the internet cables.
2)
i wasn't shocked after reading this article, but i feel that some teenagers have gone too extreme with the computer games. it is perfectly normal to spend a few hours on a certain game, but doing so everyday for too long will damage his/her health. if a close friend of mine tells me that he is addicted to computer gaming, i would not cajole him to quit entirely, as i am also a great fan of computer games and know how that would feel. instead, i would ask him to focus more on his studies, which is the top priority for a student. i would also get him/her to go out and exercise more, or form a study group to help them curb their gaming needs.

Term 2 Week 4 (13th April)
Article: "Mum’s catching up with me … on Facebook"– ‘Home’ Section (Pg B2)
1) What were the reasons given by Facebook parent, Rashida Husian, when she requests access to the networking sites and also to what her children had put online?
2)Do you think it is a good idea to accept requests by your parents to add them readily to your friends’ list on the Facebook? Why?

she was suspicious that her daughter might have been doing things she didn't want her to see.
2)
no. everybody deserves their own privacy. parents have no rights to exercise too strict a control on their children. if you don't want your parents to catch up with you, i'd suggest you don't post up things that you don't want them to see on your Facebook account. either that, or you can create another account and add your parents to the other one.

Article: "HFMD cases near epidemic level"– ‘Home’ Section (Pg B3)
1) How does HFMD spread and what are some of the preventive measures that the childcare centres and kindergartens have taken to ensure that the disease is contain?
2)In your opinion, what implications will the childcare centres face if the HFMD issue escalates further?
1)
HFMD is spread by contact with those who have the disease, or by getting the virus into your body somehow. some preventive measures taken are to ensure that children wear mouth covers and wash their hands regularly.
2)
i think that childcare centres will face a serious problem if the case escalates. for one thing, parents will be more reluctant to let their children out for fear that they might contract the disease. also, if one child at the childcare centre has contracted HFMD, most of the children inside will also get struck by it, leading to an epidemic.

· State any two reasons mentioned in the article which contributes to the sharp rise in girls under 16 having sex.
· What are some consequences which a girl might face for engaging in casual sex?
Question 2:What are some of your reactions after reading this article? If one day, a close friend of yours confess to you that he/she has been engaging in sex, what would your advice to him/her be?
1)
-girls under 16 engage in these kinds of activities as the media make it look cool.
Also, some of them do it for pleasure
-she might get pregnant or accidentally contract STDs, which might result in death for both the parent and baby.
2)
after reading this article, i feel a little bit disgusted. sex is very important and personal. it is wrong to just 'do it with anybody'; this might result in low self-esteem when the guy ditches her, or make the girl feel like a slut. if a friend tells me that he/she has been engaging in casual sex, i would tell them to stop doing so and point out the damage it can cause. i would also recommend counselling as they might be suffering from lack of confidence.
