Sec 3 E/ N(A) Straits Times Reflection Week 6
Article: “Government acts to curb younger smokers” (Pg A1 & A4)
Questions:
What are some measures by the government to curb smoking?
some measures by the government to curb smoking involve putting people suffering from cancer on the packets to serve as a warning. There are also ways such as banning smoking in public areas, increasing the price of cigarettes and banning contraband cigarettes altogether. The designated smoking areas are limited throughout the island, and many coffee shops disallow smoking within their premises.
How successful do you think these measures would be?
Support your answer with reasons.
I do not think that these measures would be successful; if they were, Singapore would already be a smoker-free country. The problem arises when people try to smuggle illegal cigarettes into the country, or teenagers try to get past the rules.
